Including requirements for type examination of the safety components

The SS 550:2020 (Code of Practice for Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Electric Passenger and Goods Lifts) was launched on 8 January 2021 at the Webinar “SS 550:2020 Code of Practice for Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Electric Passenger and Goods Lifts”, organised by Enterprise Singapore.

The adoption of SS 550:2020, will be done with a sixmonth grace period for the industry to transit from the existing SS 550:2009 (Amendment 2 & 3, 2017) to SS 550:2020.

In accordance with EN81-50

A key requirement in the SS 550:2020 is the type examination of the safety components specified in the SS 550 in accordance with EN81-50. It should be noted that, for the purpose of complying with the Fifth Schedule of the Building Control Regulations – the type examination must be performed by a Certification Body (CB) which is accredited for the specific components. Liftinstituut is one of these Certification Bodies (CB).

Approval under the Building Control Act

With effect from 1 July 2021, any lift proposed in a project whose first set of plans (either building plans or structural plans, whichever is earlier) is submitted to the Commissioner of Building Control for approval under the Building Control Act on or after this date will have to comply with SS 550:2020, including the type examination requirements.
