The new standards EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 have been harmonised under Directive 95/16/EC for Lifts since November 14, 2014. By harmonising these standards, application of them gives the presumption of conformity with the Lifts Directive.

A transition period of slightly more than 36 months was agreed. As a result, lifts based on EN 81-1/2 + A3 may be delivered and installed until 31 August 2017, the date on which the standard will be withdrawn. Until that date both EN 81-1/2 +A3 and EN 81-20/50 can be used to presume conformity with the Lift Directive’s requirements.

Update required

An update of the current standard EN 81-1/2 +A3 was badly needed. This standard is 15 years old. The main goal of the new standards is to bring lift safety in line with current insights.
